Twee jaar na het uitbrengen hun debuutalbum in 1998, brachten Queens Of The Stone Age Rated R uit. Met Rated R kreeg QOTSA hun eerste aandacht van het grote publiek. Vooral de single Feel Good Hit Of The Summer zorgde voor bekendheid. Niet het minste door de controversiële tekst. De steeds herhalende strofe, "Nicotine, valium, vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol .... c-c-c-c-c-cocaine", zorgde er voor dat een aantal radiostation het nummer weigerden te spelen.
