Santana bracht de LP Marathon voor het eerst uit in 1979. De groep ging met Marathon de commerciële tour op. Heruitgave op 180gr gekleurd vinyl. Santana's tenth studio album, Marathon, was a continuation of the infectious sound of Inner Secret. The single ""You Know That I Love You"" peaked at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100. It consisted entirely of music written by the band. The musical direction was influenced by the melodic rock that was gaining popularity at the end of the 70s. In 1999 verraste Santana de wereld met de LP Supernatural. Het ging al een tijdje bergaf met de carrière van Santana en op een bepaald moment zaten ze zelfs zonder platenlabel. In 2001 ging producer Bill Laswell aan het werk met nummers van Santana en dat resulteerde in de LP Divine Light.  Laswell koos vooral nummers uit de LP's Illuminations en Love Devotion and Surrender uit begin jaren 70. 2 LP's waarop Santana duidelijk zijn inspiratie zocht in het verre Oosten.
